Bangkok is one of the
world’s leading hospitality cities. The
competition here for your traveling money is fierce and the choices are seemingly
endless. Picking a hotel in
this city can be daunting and if you’ve ever tried to find the perfect place,
you know what a rabbit hole of options there are. You can easily brush off about 80% of the properties
in the city just because they’re so much alike; no uniqueness, nothing
special. I assume that most people
choose their hotel based on location or brand loyalty. But for me, who would get bored with that, I needed
a little more inspiration. So, I chose the
Siam@Siam Design hotel. It was… different.
Building:
Location: The property
is located on the very edge of the Siam district, the main shopping and nightlife
area of central Bangkok. Some might see
this as inconvenient, but others would say it’s a nice combination of quiet and
excitement. At the end of the elevated
rail line, it makes for easy access to and from the airport and all the major
shopping and fun of the area. But, surrounding
the property, you’ll be pressed to find anything worthy of a 2nd
look unless you’re willing to walk a few blocks in the humid heat.
Facilities: The building is
not new; I believe it’s been repurposed a few times. Still, it’s in good working order. The heritage level is below the pool deck and
not desirable. Don’t let them give you a
room with no windows because you’ll have a musty and sometimes smokey smell. Instead, I would recommend springing for the club
levels towards the top that offer a private dining lounge with the best views possible. The pool deck is a great place to hang
out. The pool, although small, is a
welcome refreshment after a day of exploring the city and the attached gym is
comprehensive enough for a decent workout.
The restaurant on the lobby level has a dark atmosphere that is great
for a romantic evening meal and a mezzanine that is the perfect place to open
your laptop and get some work done.
Amenities: Amenities
in the room were ordinary and what you’d expect from a 4-star property. Throughout
the hotel, you can get just about anything you want by just asking for it.
Décor: The décor
of the property (in the rooms and the public areas) are fantastic. It’s the star of the show. Everywhere you turn there are interesting
design features and functional art pieces.
It would take a few times running through the building to discover all
the little unique touches.
Even in the rooms, from the lamps to the wall art, you’re never left
wanting for artistic inspiration.
Service
Staff: Thai
hospitality is world famous, and the Siam@Siam didn’t disappoint. I did have a small little issue at check-in
which I explain in detail for my Youtube video review you can see here. What was most impressive was that all members
of the were well trained and well-motivated.
You could tell they had a passion for their jobs in the execution of
their duties and warmth showed towards the guests. Room for improvement was there but mostly from
the sub-par upgrade policies of the upper management that the line employees were
required to enforce, but they did it with grace.
Food: OK. It’s hard to find bad Thai food in Thailand, so
the bar is set quite high (or low). I got my fill
for a quick lunch and enjoyed the offerings.
However along with the upgrade fail I outlined in the video, came a below
average breakfast experience.
Cleanliness: With so
much detail throughout, and all the artistic expressions adorning each wall and
in every corner, keeping the hotel dust free on a daily basis is quite a chore for
the already overtaxed housekeeping department.
The same goes for the rooms, too.
I was shown an “upgraded” room on the heritage floor but was disappointment
in the moldy/smoky smell. It scared me
for what was to come next. But the room I
was given was adequate in terms of cleanliness.
The décor was great and memorable, but aging and a nice deep clean of
the corners and the bathroom area was needed.
Experience
Comfort: The bed
was big and semi-comfortable. Again,
this is an element that is tough to cater to every taste. But it was difficult to find ultra-luxury anywhere
in the property. It’s just not that kind
of place and not what you go there for.
Indeed, the best place was to find some peace and comfort was in an
empty pool deck chair with your earbuds in getting lost in the music with a
beer on the table next to you.
Uniqueness: Uniqueness
of the property stems from its interesting interior design. It doesn’t have a “theme” that I could see
other than “look at this… now look at this!”
It wasn’t boring at all, and the box style tower is architecturally uninspiring. Getting lost in the trippy designs and sculptures will make you happy and
not upset about returning back.
Value: In
Bangkok, you can pay a lot for a lot, a lot for a little, or little for a
little. There’s something for everyone. At Siam@Siam Design, you’ll find a mid-range
property with a mid-range price that’ll give you enough left over for the other
benefits of visiting such a vibrant city.

There are better choices out there for your money, especially if
you’re not a fan of the artistic touches throughout. I found it a good experience. Given the competition, it’s tough to justify
a return visit. But it’s definitely
worth a check for something unique and interesting if you’re a frequent visitor
to the city.
