The New Hangzhou Hotel offers a welcoming atmosphere in one of China’s most beautiful and historic cities. While the property may not be as well-known as some of its more luxurious counterparts, like the Shangri-La, it delivers comfort, convenience, and a pleasant stay for both business and leisure travelers.  And let’s not forget all the history!

Location: Ideal for Exploring Hangzhou

Located in central Hangzhou, the New Hangzhou Hotel offers easy access to West Lake, one of the city's most iconic attractions. The proximity to local shopping streets and restaurants makes it a perfect base for travelers who want to explore the scenic beauty and vibrant culture of the area. Whether you're interested in taking a stroll by the lake or exploring the Grand Canal, the hotel serves as an ideal starting point.

Room Experience: Simple Yet Comfortable

The rooms at the New Hangzhou Hotel are clean and functional, perfect for solo travelers or couples. While not the largest rooms, they provide everything you need for a short stay.  The dark wood furniture adds a touch of elegance, though the overall decor may feel a bit dated with traditional elements like floral wallpaper that might not appeal to everyone. However, the well-maintained rooms make up for the lack of modern style with charm and coziness.

The beds are on the firm side, which is typical for many hotels in China, but the bedding is fresh, and the presentation is impeccable. One standout feature is the attention to detail—pressed sheets, neatly arranged pillows, and well-prepared amenities like an ironing board and branded robes.

Facilities: Limited but Practical

The hotel doesn't boast a vast array of facilities like a large fitness center or luxury spa, but it offers the essentials. A small dining area serves breakfast, with a view set for a King.  Despite the simplicity, the service shines through. The staff is attentive, quick to respond to requests, and they even provide thoughtful extras like lemon water with your coffee, a mark of good hospitality.

The gardens surrounding the property offer a serene escape from the bustle of the city, providing a perfect spot for a morning walk. Though not extravagant, the gardens and terraces create a peaceful ambiance that makes this hotel more than just a place to sleep.

Dining: A Pleasant Breakfast Setting

The breakfast area at the New Hangzhou Hotel offers a relaxed start to the day. With views of the garden and a quiet atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal before heading out to explore the city. The food selection may not be vast, but it’s fresh and well-prepared, with a range of local and Western options to suit different palates.

Service: Attentive and Friendly

What the New Hangzhou Hotel lacks in high-end luxury, it more than makes up for in service. The staff is friendly and attentive, always ready to help with a smile. Whether it's assisting with luggage, helping you navigate the city, or offering suggestions on local attractions, the staff ensures that your stay is comfortable and stress-free.

Final Thoughts: A Good Choice if You Can Afford It

This is not an inexpensive place to stay.  There are sooo many other options in around the area that will give you more for your money.  Indeed, the rooms don’t match the price tag and I felt a little taken.  That was until I walked out the front door and started to explore the area.  The location is what you pay for here, more than anything.  But, there are intangible benefits that might also justify the steep price such as the history (if that’s your thing).
