The Kande International Hotel in Huizhou, China, offers a
mix of classic charm and modern convenience in one of the city’s most scenic
and historic locations. While it wasn’t my first choice for accommodation, it
proved to be an excellent fallback after my original boutique hotel near West
Lake couldn’t accommodate foreign guests—a rare but understandable situation in
some smaller establishments in China.
Located at the entrance to Huizhou’s famed West Lake area, the Kande Hotel stands as a local landmark. Opened in 2008, the hotel reflects the opulent yet slightly aging style of mid-2000s Chinese luxury properties. Despite its age, the hotel is impeccably maintained, and its location alone makes it a standout. The bustling West Lake neighborhood, with its mix of ancient parks and modern conveniences, is mere steps away. Additionally, the surrounding area boasts a vibrant dining and nightlife scene, with numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants catering to a range of tastes.
Upon entering the lobby, I was immediately drawn to the
traditional Chinese furniture store, which showcased some jaw-dropping pieces.
A carved bed frame and an intricate living room set were true works of art,
embodying the craftsmanship and artistry that traditional Chinese furniture is
known for. It was a small but notable touch that set the tone for the hotel’s
blend of cultural authenticity and luxury.
My room, though showing signs of the hotel’s age, was clean,
comfortable, and thoughtfully appointed. It featured an understated yet elegant
design, with dark wood furniture and embroidered bedding that added a touch of
class. The bed itself was firm, as is common in Chinese hotels, but the
pillow-top layer ensured a good night’s sleep.
One of the room’s highlights was the view—I was upgraded to
a river-facing room, and it did not disappoint. From my window, I could see the
city lights reflecting on the water, the hotel’s pool area below, and the
Renaissance Hotel towering in the distance. While I’ve often enjoyed views of
West Lake during past visits to Huizhou, this different perspective offered a
refreshing change.
The room had all the standard amenities, including a
mini-bar and complimentary water, but what stood out were the small, thoughtful
touches: dual bathrobes catering to different preferences, a loofah among the
toiletries, and USB ports for charging devices—a rarity in older hotels.
The hotel’s second floor houses its restaurants, including
Italian, Japanese, and Chinese options, as well as the breakfast buffet. While
I didn’t dine there this time, the range of offerings makes it clear that the
Kande caters to both international and local tastes. The breakfast buffet
promises a comprehensive selection of dishes, making it a convenient option for
travelers starting their day.
The outdoor swimming pool, situated just below my room,
looked inviting, though the hot tub, unfortunately, appeared to be out of
service—a small disappointment. The gym was undergoing renovations during my
stay, which is a common occurrence in hotels striving to modernize their
facilities.
Perhaps the Kande’s greatest asset is its location. Sitting
at the gateway to West Lake Park, the hotel is perfectly situated for exploring
one of Huizhou’s most famous attractions. West Lake offers an escape into
nature with its lush gardens, historic bridges, and serene waters. This
district is one of the oldest in the city and serves as a cultural hub,
blending the charm of traditional China with the conveniences of modern life.
Nearby, the West Lake neighborhood also offers a variety of
dining and entertainment options. I ventured into a local spot for a bowl of
chow fun soup, a regional specialty featuring beef, shrimp, and egg in a
flavorful broth. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, topped off with a local
dessert that perfectly rounded out the evening.
While the Kande International Hotel isn’t a brand-new
property, it’s clear that its management takes pride in maintaining high
standards. The staff exemplified traditional Chinese hospitality, from their
prompt assistance during check-in to their courteous demeanor throughout my
stay. These qualities made up for the hotel’s minor flaws, such as the outdated
TV and aging fixtures.
What makes the Kande special isn’t just the amenities or the
service; it’s the feeling of being at the heart of Huizhou. The hotel offers a
gateway to the city’s rich history and natural beauty, all while providing the
comfort and convenience of a well-established property. For travelers like me,
who appreciate a mix of tradition and practicality, the Kande International
Hotel is a solid choice.
If you’re visiting Huizhou and want a centrally located,
reliable place to stay that’s steeped in local culture, the Kande won’t
disappoint. Just be prepared for a touch of old-world charm and an unbeatable
location. After all, it’s not just a hotel—it’s part of the story of Huizhou
itself.
