Visiting Chimelong Water Park in Guangzhou was an unforgettable experience. Nestled within the Chimelong Resort in the southern part of the city, the water park boasts a reputation as one of the best in the world and the most popular in China, drawing nearly three million visitors annually. As I approached the gates on a sweltering summer day, the buzz of excitement was palpable, even with the threat of afternoon thunderstorms hanging in the air—a quintessential feature of Guangdong’s subtropical climate.

Chimelong Water Park’s reputation precedes it. This sprawling aquatic wonderland features attractions for everyone, from thrilling water slides to expansive lazy rivers, making it a destination for families and thrill-seekers alike. The park’s claim to fame includes the title of the world's most-attended water park, and as I stepped inside, I understood why. The grounds were meticulously maintained, the attractions innovative, and the atmosphere electric.

The day started with an introduction to the park’s impressive amenities. A massive locker area greeted us, efficiently handling the belongings of thousands of visitors. Despite the overcast sky and the occasional rumble of thunder, the energy was undeniable. Families, couples, and groups of friends eagerly lined up for rides, unperturbed by the weather—a stark contrast to my experiences back home, where even the hint of lightning would close the park.

I was particularly intrigued by Chimelong's famous lazy river, one of the longest in Asia. Floating along its winding course under shady trees, I enjoyed a rare moment of serenity amidst the excitement.  To add to the mix, there are areas that are rather bumpy… but I enjoyed that aspect of the river as well.   The park’s design cleverly combines relaxation with adventure.

Lunch was another adventure. Chimelong’s food is notorious for being hit-or-miss, and my meal was no exception. The “super burger” I ordered turned out to be a chicken sandwich—a common substitution in China—accompanied by small fries and a drink. Despite its surprising appearance, the burger was unexpectedly good, possibly enhanced by my growing hunger after hours of exploring.

The rides at Chimelong Water Park are world-class. From swirling tube slides to exhilarating wave pools, each attraction offered a unique thrill. One standout was a swirling vortex ride that felt like being caught in a massive whirlpool before being spat out into the water below. Its innovative design and the sheer fun of the experience made it my favorite ride of the day.

As evening fell, the park transformed. The main wave pool became the stage for an elaborate nighttime concert, complete with synchronized light shows, jet pack performers soaring above the water, and booming music that echoed across the grounds. The festive atmosphere was infectious, drawing crowds who danced, laughed, and celebrated under the starlit sky. It was a fitting finale to an already exceptional day.  And watch out for the lifeguards… they are abundantly attentive, whistle at the ready.

There are shaded areas aplenty, essential for escaping the relentless Guangdong sun, and a variety of pools and play areas for children, ensuring that visitors of all ages have a great time. Despite the large crowds, the park’s layout and efficient management made it easy to navigate and enjoy.

For those on a budget, Chimelong offers discounted evening tickets, allowing visitors to experience the park for a fraction of the daytime price. It’s a fantastic option for anyone who wants to avoid the midday heat while still enjoying the park’s highlights, including the spectacular evening shows.

I can confidently say the Chimelong Water Park lives up to its reputation. While some areas of the larger resort, like the roller coaster park, may have fallen short of expectations in the past, the water park exceeded them in every way. Its combination of thrilling attractions, beautiful design, and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Guangzhou.
