Walkabout Weekend: Escaping to Vietnam’s Hidden Gem – Măng Đen, Kon Tum.

There’s always something special about discovering a hidden gem, a place not yet overwhelmed by mass tourism, where the air feels a little fresher, the pace a bit slower, and adventures still genuine and spontaneous. My recent Walkabout to Măng Đen, Kon Tum, delivered exactly that kind of authentic experience, and then some!

Leaving the familiar hustle of Da Nang behind, my family, some friends, and I packed our trusty Hyundai for a weekend escape into Vietnam’s Central Highlands. The drive itself was beautiful, winding roads slicing through lush green hillsides, valleys peppered with quaint villages, and occasional roadside stops where we stretched our legs and admired panoramic views.

Măng Đen, located in the Kon Tum province, sits at about 1,200 meters above sea level, making it refreshingly cool year-round and perfect for those of us seeking an escape from the heat of Vietnam’s coastal cities. Once we arrived, the place instantly charmed us with its vibrant yet laid-back vibe. The main road, buzzing with mountain-town energy, was lined with colorful local eateries serving delicious barbecue chicken, a Măng Đen specialty.

The history of Măng Đen is intriguing. Over a century ago, French missionaries ventured into these remote highlands, establishing Christian communities and planting the seeds for the town’s diverse cultural heritage. Even today, the presence of these roots is clearly visible in the numerous churches and the unique blend of cultural traditions practiced here.

A notable landmark is the statue of the Virgin Mary, drawing pilgrims from across Vietnam and abroad. It's an impressive and peaceful spot, surrounded by lush gardens, where one can observe a fascinating blend of Catholic rituals harmoniously coexisting with traditional Vietnamese spiritual practices. Watching nuns quietly praying while nearby, incense burned at traditional altars, provided a striking snapshot of the area's cultural depth.

Today, Măng Đen is becoming renowned not only for its historical and cultural significance but also for its dedication to sustainable agriculture and farming technology. Local farms, like the one we explored after navigating dirt roads and lush valleys, grow everything from gigantic pumpkins to vibrant strawberries in innovative greenhouse setups. It's clear that the community is making a conscientious effort towards sustainability, a trend I deeply respect and admire.

Sampling the produce firsthand (fresh strawberries, sweet cherry tomatoes, and crisp mountain greens) gave me a real appreciation for the land and the efforts of the local people who cultivate it.

One highlight of the trip was our stay at Cafe 37 Ho, a charming homestay featuring rustic A-frame cabins perched atop a picturesque ridge. The simple but comfortable accommodations were perfect for unwinding. No TV meant quality family time was prioritized, and honestly, grading papers while listening to distant thunderstorms and chirping birds was surprisingly peaceful.

Nearby, our friends stayed at different Homestay, which offered spectacular mountain views from its cozy veranda. Each morning brought clear skies, fresh coffee, and tranquil walks through quiet pine-lined streets, a stark contrast to the city’s early morning bustle.

Of course, no Walkabout would be complete without a little excitement. In my case, it came courtesy of my drone, which decided to take an unscheduled dive off a cliff. After a nervous night wondering if I'd lost my aerial footage forever, a heroic local guide skillfully recovered the drone, slightly scratched but surprisingly intact. As my father used to say when he built his own drones, “If you’re going to fly, you’re going to cry.” True words, Dad!

We explored numerous attractions, including a delightful horse farm, where Jolly experienced her first horse ride, and a treehouse village offering zip-lining, trampolines, and stunning views of dense pine forests. Măng Đen offers something for every adventurer, whether thrill-seeker or tranquility-seeker.

The culinary scene in Măng Đen deserves special praise. Aside from the famous barbecue chicken, local eateries serve incredible dishes crafted from fresh local ingredients. Our nights were spent grilling meats and vegetables over open fires, sipping local wine, and enjoying the cool mountain air. There’s something genuinely satisfying about eating fresh, locally-sourced food, especially when shared with friends under a sky bursting with stars.

Măng Đen is special precisely because it’s still largely undiscovered. You won’t find massive hotels or tourist traps here, just welcoming homestays, family-run cafés, sprawling farms, and endless natural beauty. It’s ideal for travelers looking to reconnect with nature, families seeking quality time, or anyone yearning for a peaceful, adventurous getaway.

Măng Đen offers an authentic Vietnam experience that feels worlds away from everyday life.

Planning Your Trip

If you’re considering a visit (and I highly recommend you do), here are a few tips:

  • Accommodation: Opt for homestays to support the local community and enjoy genuine hospitality.

  • Activities: Explore local farms, ride horses, visit religious sites, and enjoy outdoor activities.

  • Packing: Pack layers; evenings can get cool. Also, don't forget your drone, but maybe fly cautiously!

  • Duration: A weekend is great, but a longer stay allows you to fully embrace the slower pace and diverse activities.

Our Walkabout weekend in Măng Đen was exactly what we needed: fun, relaxing, adventurous, and full of surprises. It reminded me why I continue exploring. Discovering hidden treasures like Măng Đen is endlessly rewarding.

So next time you crave a break from city life, put Măng Đen, Kon Tum on your list. Trust me; your only regret will be not going sooner!

Stay adventurous,

Paul (Walkabout Rojo)
